Permanent brows come in four main finishes at Shihan Beauty Clinic in Avon: microblading, nano hairstrokes, powder or ombré, and combo. All four place pigment into the skin. What differs is the tool, the finish and the skin each one suits best. Here is how they compare, and what Nahid looks at before recommending one.
Is microblading a tattoo?
Yes. Microblading, nano hairstrokes, powder brows and combo brows all place pigment into the skin, and all are a form of cosmetic tattooing. They differ in how the pigment is placed and in the finish they create, not in whether pigment goes into the skin.
That matters for two reasons. First, a permanent brow is a decision to plan carefully, not a quick add-on. Second, the person doing it should be properly trained and licensed; our guide to choosing a permanent makeup artist in Connecticut explains what to check.
Microblading vs. powder brows: what is the difference?
The short answer: strokes versus shading.
- Microblading uses a manual tool to place fine strokes that resemble individual brow hairs. It suits clients who want texture: a brow that reads as hair rather than makeup.
- Powder brows use a micropigmentation device to layer soft pixels of pigment, building a velvety, filled-in effect similar to brow powder. They suit clients who like a polished, filled-in look and want softness and definition adjusted to their features.
If you fill in your brows with powder or pencil every morning and love that look, powder brows may be the closer match. If you want brows that look like more hair, a hairstroke technique is usually the starting point.
Nano brows vs. microblading
Both create hairstrokes. The difference is the tool.
- Microblading places each stroke by hand with a manual blade.
- Nano hairstrokes are made with a micropigmentation machine and an ultra-fine needle configuration. The needle makes controlled, repetitive punctures that deposit pigment along each planned stroke.
Both aim for a soft, airy hair pattern. At Shihan, the Hairstroke Brow is the result, and Nahid chooses manual microblading or machine nano strokes for it based on your skin and the finish you want. One note on the name: “nano” describes the machine approach. It does not mean the result is temporary or risk-free.
What are combo brows?
A combo brow combines both approaches: hairstrokes, created by microblading or nano, with soft machine shading between the strokes, at the tail, or both.
It gives more visual fullness than hairstrokes alone and more texture than a powder brow. It is useful when the front of the brow should stay airy but the body or tail needs more definition.
Ombré vs. powder brows: are they the same?
At Shihan they are one service, the Powder Brow / Ombré Brow. “Ombré” describes the gradient: pigment is placed more deliberately along the bottom of the brow and through the tail, so the front stays softer.
Side-by-side comparison
| Technique | Finish | How it is created | May suit you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microblading | Fine, hair-like strokes | Manual tool | You want texture that resembles individual hairs |
| Nano hairstrokes | Fine, hair-like strokes | Machine with an ultra-fine needle configuration | You want stroke texture, and machine strokes suit your skin |
| Powder / ombré | Soft, filled-in shading | Machine shading in soft pixels | You like the look of brow powder or pencil |
| Combo | Strokes plus shading | Hairstrokes plus machine shading | You want an airy front with more definition through the body or tail |

Which permanent brow is best for your skin type?
Skin type is one of the main reasons a technique is chosen in person rather than from a photo. Before recommending hand-drawn strokes, machine strokes, shading or a combination, Nahid looks at:
- Your skin characteristics
- Your natural brow hair and symmetry
- Any old pigment, scarring or previous treatment
- How much density you want, and how much maintenance you are comfortable with
- The result you would actually wear comfortably every day
If you have oily or sensitive skin, or any previous brow work, mention it when you book. It can change which technique is the right fit.
Permanent brows vs. lamination, tinting and threading
Not every brow goal needs pigment. Shihan also offers non-permanent brow services:
- Brow lamination redirects and sets your natural hairs into a fuller, more orderly shape, without pigment.
- Brow tinting changes the visible color of your natural brow hair for temporary definition.
- Brow design and shaping uses threading to shape the hair you already have.
Permanent brows are the choice when you want lasting definition instead of daily pencil, tint, lamination or threading alone.
How Nahid chooses your technique
Microblading at Shihan starts with a consultation. Nahid reviews your goals, skin, natural hair and any prior work, then maps the brow so shape, balance and proportion can be discussed with you before anything is placed. Pigment is placed conservatively, because adding more later is easier than undoing too much.
How long do permanent brows last?
It varies. Retention depends on the treatment, your skin, sun exposure, lifestyle and aftercare, and Nahid will explain the expected maintenance for the technique you choose. A touch-up is not automatically needed just because time has passed; the decision is based on how your brows have healed.
Also keep in mind that brow color and sharpness on the day of your appointment are not the healed result. Brows normally change as surface healing progresses and pigment settles.
Already have brow tattooing?
Existing pigment changes the decision. Faded work may only need a touch-up, but uneven color, an outdated shape or heavy saturation may call for correction or lightening first. Touch-up, correction or removal explains how those paths differ.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, microblading or powder brows?
Neither is better overall; they create different finishes. Microblading creates fine, hair-like strokes for a textured look. Powder brows use soft machine shading for a filled-in, makeup-like look. The better choice depends on your skin, your natural hair and the result you want to wear every day.
Is nano brows better than microblading?
Both create hairstrokes. Microblading uses a manual tool, while nano hairstrokes use a micropigmentation machine with an ultra-fine needle configuration. Nahid recommends one or the other based on your skin and desired finish. Nano does not mean the result is temporary or risk-free.
What is the difference between combo brows and powder brows?
Powder brows are shading only. Combo brows add hairstrokes, made by microblading or nano, to that shading, which gives more texture than a powder brow and more fullness than hairstrokes alone.
Is microblading permanent?
Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing, so pigment is placed into the skin. How long it lasts varies with your skin, sun exposure, lifestyle and aftercare, and future maintenance is decided based on how the brows have healed.
